Virtual try-on (VTON)

Virtual try-on, often shortened to VTON, is technology that shows a shopper what a garment looks like on a body before they buy it. In fashion ecommerce it renders catalogue products onto a shopper’s photo or a chosen body model, replacing the guesswork a flat product photograph leaves behind.

Every try-on system needs three things: an image of the garment, a representation of the body, and a method for putting one on the other. The first two are commodity problems. The third is where products in this category differ, and it is the reason two tools described with the same words can produce results that are not comparable.

For a retailer the interesting number is the return rate. Apparel returns run 20–30% of orders (NRF / Happy Returns 2025 Retail Returns Landscape) and roughly half of those are size or fit related, so try-on is aimed squarely at the largest addressable slice of the problem rather than at the whole of it.

Try-on also changes what a product page can answer. A photograph tells a shopper what the garment is; a render tells them what it will be like on them, which is the question that decides whether the parcel comes back.
