Cross-sell

Cross-sell is the practice of putting a related product in front of a customer who is already buying something — the belt beside the trousers. In fashion it works best when the pairing is shown rather than suggested, because the shopper is judging a look, not a list.

The standard implementation is a row of thumbnails chosen by an algorithm that has never seen the shopper, which is why it is so easy to ignore. It asks the customer to take a risk on the retailer’s judgement at the exact moment they are trying to reduce risk.

Outfit-level try-on inverts that. The shopper assembles the combination themselves and the render either confirms it or does not, so a second item enters the basket because it looked right rather than because it was recommended.
